The Weekly Dose - Dream job
"Don't be afraid to open the fairy doors at the bottom of the garden, you never know what's behind them" Rachel Schofield
Hello,
How are you?
I’ve had a crazy busy week. Some interesting consultancy projects and lots of conversations about the new Get Recommended group coaching starting soon.
It fits nicely into the podcast chat this week which is all about the ‘dream job’. It feels like a mythical beast that we are all hunting but no one has seen for a while. Rachel and I talk about the realities of starting out on your own and finding a new job when you want a career change. And that you can make quite a few moves from work, contracting, running a business, back to full time work - and that’s completely OK. You do not need one perfect leap. The important bit is to try, try and help yourself be in a position to find work that you love.
If you are self-employed and looking to grow your business to next level in 2025 this is the perfect experience to join. It’s taken me 8 years to get to a place where I’m earning money how I want to earn it, and I’ve made quite a few errors a long the way. The good news is you don’t have to make those errors, I share all I know about growing my consultancy, my speaking work, getting a book deal, creating an audience - everything you need to get known for your work, and ultimately getting recommended for it.
If you are interested more information is here, and a link to book a call to talk about if it’s right for you. Last chance to work with me this year - I’m pretty much booked out until January 2025 now.

Have a great week.

Five things this week…
1.Rethink space
Dream job moves - If you are thinking about career change, think about what you need right now. Career change is a series of changes and steps, it’s not one perfect move, it’s lots of moves and shifts and progress. Career change isn’t a destination, it’s an ongoing exploration of possibility.
So start here. What do you need right now?
Needs Must - Practically you might need to just earn some money right now, or have more time, or look after you health - the Needs Must job fulfils this and is in fact your perfect job right now.
Foot in the Door - not the perfect job, but maybe you need some experience, or you need to get in front of people that can make it happen - the ‘foot in the door ‘job can help you move towards a dream job.
Rebound - Watch out for the rebound job! Yes short term makes you feel good, but is it right for you?
Dream job - Its rare we can jump straight into this, but do you even know hat that dream scenario would be? You can only chase our dream if you know what it is.

Another Door podcast - with Rachel Schofield ‘Is a dream job really possible?’
"I just started to ask myself, as many people do ‘Do I want to do this for another 20 years? Is there something else?’. I got curious, maybe there are some other doors I want to look through and maybe it's time to shut this door and find out."
Does a dream job really exist? We’re joined by the seasoned journalist and career coach Rachel Schofield to talk about ‘dream jobs’. We explore the themes of unearthing core passions, overcoming imposter syndrome, and finding stability amidst the chaos of change. And what if you have, on paper, a dream job, but have a feeling there might be something else you want to do.
Rachel shares her own story from a 20-year career at the BBC to creating a new career in coaching and training, offering insights and practical advice for anyone starting a new career chapter. Listen to rediscover joy in your work and the permission to experiment and try new things.
"When you're thinking about particularly a career shift...really lean into experimentation. So rather than thinking you need to sit there and figure it all out...just think maybe I'll just knock on that blue door over there. Maybe I'll just look in that little tiny door that looks like a fairy door at the bottom of the tree."

Why you keep forgetting things! Really enjoy this Substack by Chris Guillebeau In this article Chris shares practical advice on why we forget things.
For me, maybe its an age thing, but there is a lot to think about i this article which lists reasons why, and what you can do about it.
I’m trying out ‘Task Shredding’, not easy for a person who lives, permanently, in ‘multi task world’. But I’m being focused on it, and watching out when I blur boundaries of a task.

Practice "Task Shedding" Instead of Multitasking
Rather than attempting to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously (which can overwhelm working memory), intentionally choose what to focus on and what to let go. This isn't about doing less, but about reducing cognitive load. When faced with multiple tasks, explicitly decide which one is most important right now. Write down or make a voice memo of the others so you can release them from your working memory without anxiety. Return to the list only when you're ready to switch tasks.
